Martin Luther King, Jr., Day will be observed in the United States on January 16, 2023. You may already know that Martin Luther King, Jr., was an important leader in the civil rights movement. Today, King’s daughter is continuing his work.

Bernice King is the youngest daughter of Martin Luther King, Jr., and Coretta Scott King. The Kings taught their children what was important to them. They taught them that everyone should be treated equally and that laws should be fair. Martin Luther King, Jr., led marches and gave many speeches. He worked to change racist laws and wanted to help end poverty. The Kings believed that people could work for change in a peaceful way.

In 1968, Martin Luther King, Jr., was killed. Shortly after, Coretta Scott King started the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change. She wanted the King Center to be a place that continued her husband’s work and promoted his beliefs.

Today, Bernice King is the head of the King Center. The center gives people the skills they need to change unfair laws and actions. Under Bernice King’s leadership, the center is working to make the world a fairer, more equal place.

Like her father, Bernice King wants to spread her message as far as possible. She gives many speeches. In 2022, she co-wrote a children’s book called It Starts With Me. The book is about how everyone should love and care about others.

“Now more than ever, I believe that my father would encourage [all people] to join together in love,” Bernice King wrote in The Atlantic in 2021.

Martin Luther King, Jr., won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. This prize is awarded once a year to a person who works to promote peace and rights for all. It can be given to anyone in the world.

King won the prize for his work to change laws that were unfair to Black Americans. King did not believe in violence. He spread his message by giving speeches and by leading marches that would get the attention of people who had the power to change laws.

Local kids visit Jonathan near his home on the island of Saint Helena.

He may not be as old as Yoda from Star Wars, but Jonathan the giant tortoise has been around for a long time. In December 2022, Jonathan celebrated his 190th birthday! He’s the oldest-known land animal in the world.

Experts can’t be sure of Jonathan’s exact age. They’re guessing he was born around 1832, but his birth year may be even earlier. That’s because he was fully grown when people found him in the wild in 1882—and giant tortoises don’t stop growing until they are 40 or 50 years old!

Jonathan was brought to Saint Helena in 1882. This photo was taken soon after. Jonathan is the tortoise on the left!

Jonathan was taken from a group of islands called the Seychelles to Saint Helena, an island in the South Atlantic Ocean, and given as a gift to the island’s future governor. Today he lives on Saint Helena with three other giant tortoises. His favorite foods are bananas, cabbage, carrots, and apples. His hobbies include sleeping, eating, and walking…very slowly.

Amazingly, there’s a photo of Jonathan that was taken in 1882, shortly after he arrived on Saint Helena. The picture reveals that Jonathan hasn’t aged a day!

Can you guess how many ants there are in the world? The number is almost too big to imagine! Researchers believe that there are 20 quadrillion ants. That’s 20,000,000,000,000,000.

It’s not possible to count every single ant, so researchers had to make an estimate. To come up with that giant number, they looked at information gathered from researchers who studied ants all over the world. From there, they were able to come to another amazing conclusion. If you could gather all the ants in the world onto a huge scale, they would weigh 12 million tons (11 million metric tons)!

Scientists say it’s important to study ants because the insects help to keep the planet healthy. Ants are found on every continent except Antarctica. Ants eat other insects and their eggs, keeping insect populations under control. They also eat dead insects, so they play a big part in keeping the planet clean. Ants are even important for plant growth because they turn the soil as they move through it. This allows plant roots to grow through the soil and get the nutrients they need.

So, what does it mean that there are so many ants? Scientists say it means ants are super valuable. Researchers want to keep an eye on all the world’s ants. If the ants’ numbers go down, this will be a sign that the environment has become less healthy for living things.

Fun Fact Icon

There are more than 12,000 ant species. The Saharan silver ant lives in a desert called the Sahara. It can run 34 inches (86 centimeters) per second. That’s the same as if you were able to run 447 miles (720 kilometers) per hour—almost as fast as an airplane!

The ant dashes over the sand in the middle of the hot desert day to look for dead insects to eat. Like those insects, the ant would die in the heat if it wasn’t able to get back to its nest quickly.

Teamwork!

© Khlongwangchao—Creatas Video/Getty Images

Have you ever seen a bridge like this?

Ants live together in groups called colonies. To keep the colony going, the ants need to make sure the head of the colony—the queen—has the nutrients she needs to lay eggs. They also need to feed the whole population and keep the nest clean. And they need to defend the colony against enemies, like other insects. Ants work together really well. How do they do it? They talk to each other!

Ants don’t actually speak, of course. They communicate, or talk, using chemicals. Worker ants release these chemicals from their bodies to send messages like “I found some food” and “Someone is attacking the colony!” The other ants use their antennas to smell these chemicals.

You may have watched as an ant discovered something sweet to eat. Before you know it, more ants have appeared. That’s because the first ant left a trail of chemicals leading to the food, and the other ants followed the trail!

In this 2021 photo, Prince William and his wife, the Duchess of Cambridge (right) talk to winners of the Earthshot Prize.

On December 2, 2022, Prince William of the United Kingdom awarded five people with an important prize. The Earthshot Prize isn’t for music, movies, or sports. It’s for working to save Planet Earth.

The Earthshot Prize is given to people who are working on solutions to climate change and other environmental problems. Awards are given in five categories. Winners are chosen based on how effective or wide reaching their ideas are. This year’s winners each received 1 million pounds (about $1,200,000 in U.S. money).

The 2022 award ceremony took place in Boston, Massachusetts. The five winners were honored for working to protect the planet in different ways, from creating less pollution to protecting crops from severe weather. There were some big stars on hand to entertain them, including musicians Billie Eilish, Chloe and Halle Bailey, and Annie Lennox.

Prince William started the Earthshot Prize in 2020. He has often spoken about the importance of the environment. In a speech he gave in 2021, he spoke directly to young people.

“We are going to find solutions to repair our planet,” said Prince William. “Please keep learning, keep demanding change, and don’t give up hope. We will rise to these challenges.”

The Winners!

This photo shows a plastic alternative that was invented by a company called Notpla. Notpla was one of the winners of the 2022 Earthshot Prize.

Here’s who won the 2022 Earthshot Prize in each category.

Protecting Nature

A company from India called Kheyti won in this category for its Greenhouse-in-a-Box. The greenhouse protects crops from severe weather and harmful insects so farmers have more to sell and can make more money to feed their families. Crops grown in the greenhouse also require less water than crops that are out in the open.

Cleaning Our Air

Charlot Magayi of Kenya won for inventing a type of stove that’s safer and creates less pollution than a stove that burns charcoal for fuel. Magayi’s company, Mukuru Clean Stoves, sells stoves that run on fuel made from charcoal, wood, and sugarcane. The stoves aren’t just cleaner than charcoal stoves—they’re also cheaper to buy.

Saving Our Oceans

A group called the Queensland Indigenous Women Rangers Network (QIWRN) won in this category. QIWRN, which is based in Australia, has trained more than 60 Indigenous (Native Australian) women to be park rangers. The rangers collect information that helps protect the Great Barrier Reef, a huge group of coral reefs that are home to thousands of species of ocean life.

Reducing Waste

Pierre Paslier and Rodrigo Garcia Gonzalez of the United Kingdom won for inventing a material that can be used instead of plastic. Their company, Notpla (short for “Not Plastic”), produces a plastic alternative that’s made from seaweed. The company is working on creating even more materials. Its goal is to reduce plastic waste, which often ends up polluting the oceans.

Fixing Our Climate

A company called 44.01 won in this category for inventing a way to capture carbon dioxide, the main gas that’s contributing to climate change. The company removes carbon dioxide from the air by adding it to water and then pumping that water into cracks in a type of rock called peridotite. The carbon dioxide gets mineralized, meaning that it turns into rock. Once this happens, it won’t be released into the atmosphere again.

Singer Billie Eilish Works for Planet Earth

A young woman appears on a screen in front of a seated audience.

Sebastian Reuter/Getty Images

Billie Eilish (on screen) speaks to a group of people at the Greentech Festival. People go to the festival every year to talk about ways to make products that help Planet Earth.

Singer Billie Eilish was one of the performers when the Earthshot Prize was presented. It wasn’t the first time Eilish took action to help the planet. In June, she hosted a climate event called Overheated. Climate activists (people who work to save the planet), musicians, and designers attended the event. They talked about the ways in which they try to protect Planet Earth.

Why did musicians and designers want to talk about the planet? Musicians often go on tour to play concerts. They can affect the planet, depending on the way they choose to travel, the food they eat, and more. Designers make clothing. They make a lot of choices about what materials to use and where to get those materials, and those choices can affect the planet. So, the people at Overheated talked about making better choices.

Eilish thought about Planet Earth when she planned her 2022 World Tour. She and her crew used reusable water bottles and utensils, for example. To avoid food waste, they donated all the food they didn’t end up eating to groups that help to feed people. And items like plastic cups weren’t allowed at the places where Eilish had her concerts.

Everyone can make choices that help protect Planet Earth!

Vinice Mabansag, who was born in the Philippines, was one of the babies named as Earth’s eight billionth person. (There’s no way to know which baby was truly the eight billionth.)

November 15, 2022, was a big day for the entire planet. On that day, the world population reached eight billion!

How big is eight billion? If you write it out, it looks like this: 8,000,000,000. That’s a lot of people! Experts say the world population has grown by one billion in just the past 12 years.

What’s causing the population to grow? Experts say people are living longer than ever before. That’s because more people have clean drinking water and other resources to help them stay healthy. Plus, many diseases have become easier to treat. Overall, the world population is healthier than ever.

Another thing that can cause the population to grow is the birth of many babies. But experts say families have fewer children than they used to. So the birth rate (the number of babies born each year) is slower than it once was. The United Nations (UN) believes that the population will continue to grow until about the year 2080, when there will be a little more than 10 billion people in the world.

The UN says it’s important for everyone around the world to help make sure that the planet is healthy, safe, and peaceful. That way, all eight billion people can live happy, healthy lives.

Move your mouse along the line on the graph. You can see the world population in many years between 1500 and 2020.

What Is the United Nations?

At the United Nations, representatives from many countries meet to talk about issues affecting the whole world.

You may have heard about the United Nations, or the UN. The UN is keeping track of the world population. But why? What is the UN, and what does it do?

The UN is an international (worldwide) organization in which nations work together on problems that affect the whole world. Right now, 193 nations are members of the UN. Together, members talk about and work on solutions for problems like war, hunger, and climate change. They recognize that solving problems like these can lead to a healthier, more peaceful planet.

Alejandro Buxton is pretty busy. Like any 12-year-old, he goes to school every day. Alejandro is also an entrepreneur (a person who starts a business). Before and after school, he runs his company, Smell of Love Candles.

Alejandro began making candles to help his mom. She likes to light candles, but the scents were giving her headaches. Alejandro learned which ingredients might be causing those headaches, and he made candles with different ingredients. His mom felt so much better that Alejandro decided to start a candle business. Today, Smell of Love Candles makes candles with 26 different scents. They’re available online and at a kiosk (a stand) located in a mall near Alejandro’s home in Virginia. Alejandro’s mom helps him with the business side of things, and his younger sister, Valentina, assists with packing up candle orders.

Alejandro’s business is doing well, and he’s making money. He uses some of it to buy comic books and saves some of it so he can go to college. Alejandro wants to help other kids go to college too. According to the Smell of Love website, the company uses some of the money it makes from candle sales to pay for a scholarship fund. A scholarship is money that is given to kids to help them pay for their education.

Alejandro hopes to inspire other kids to follow their dreams. He offers advice on his YouTube channel and even hosts a podcast called Lessons from a Kidpreneur.

To Alejandro, success isn’t only about making money. It’s about using what he has to help others.

“My future goal is to just help people around the world,” Alejandro told the Gazette.

The purpose of Artemis I is to test the performance and safety of Orion. It’s sort of like a practice run. On November 28, Orion was 280,000 miles (450,000 kilometers) from Earth. If all goes as planned, it soon will carry astronauts way out there, too.

Artemis I is only the beginning. NASA is planning Artemis II for 2024. In that mission, Orion will take four astronauts to the far side of the Moon (the side farthest from Earth) and back.

Artemis III is planned for 2025. Orion will link up with another spacecraft, which will land two astronauts on the Moon. It will be the first time humans have set foot on the Moon since 1972!

It’s not always easy for people to explore the ocean. So scientists studying seagrass (grass that grows in the sea) decided recently to get some helpers. They attached cameras and other equipment to tiger sharks!

The team of scientists wanted to know how much seagrass is growing in an area of ocean near a group of islands called the Bahamas. They attached cameras or tracking equipment to 15 tiger sharks. The sharks were then released and swam around as they normally would. The cameras and equipment were designed to fall off the sharks within about 24 hours.

The pictures and other information captured by the equipment show that the patch of seagrass near the Bahamas is as large as 35,521 square miles (92,000 square kilometers). It might be the largest patch of seagrass on the planet!

Scientists say it’s important to know where there’s seagrass. Like forests, seagrass takes in carbon dioxide, which means it plays a big part in controlling climate change.

Before the study, scientists didn’t know how large the patch of seagrass was. In fact, there is still a lot that humans don’t know about the ocean because it can be hard to explore. Thanks to the sharks, we’re learning more. The size of the seagrass patch is good news for the climate.

Is that a great white shark? Nope! That’s a tiger shark. Tiger sharks get their name from the up-and-down stripes on their bodies. The stripes are easiest to see when a tiger shark is young. Birds think this falcon is real, but it’s a robot!

Scientists in Europe have invented a robot that looks and flies just like a large bird called a falcon. The robot is an awesome flier, but it also has an important job.

Scientists invented the robot to solve a serious problem. Flocks of birds often fly and land in and around airports. Sometimes the birds get hit by planes that are taking off and landing. Airport workers have tried different ways to scare away the birds. They’ve tried training real falcons to fly toward the birds. Falcons hunt smaller birds, so it makes sense that birds would be afraid of them. But falcons are expensive and hard to train.

So scientists decided to create a robot that looks like a falcon. They studied a bird called the peregrine falcon to see how it moves when it flies. They made sure their robot could fly in the same way. They even painted the robot to match the colors of a real falcon. Then, they tested it with flocks of birds.

The robot is made to look just like a real falcon.

Since the falcon was a robot, scientists could get it to fly wherever they chose. They sent it to runways where birds were gathered. Did it work? Yes! The birds flew away, as if the robot was a real falcon.

Scientists say robot falcons could be used to keep birds safe all over the world.

Peregrine falcons hunt by flying very high and then diving down toward flying birds. As it dives, a peregrine falcon can move up to 200 miles per hour (322 kilometers per hour)!

Why Some Birds Fly in a V Shape

Have you ever seen a flock of birds in the sky? You may have noticed that, together, the birds seem to make a shape in the air. Often, it’s the shape of the letter V. Why do birds do that?

For one thing, many kinds of birds fly in groups so that they can help one another. Larger birds, like falcons, hunt smaller birds in the air. A bird flying in a flock is safer than a bird that flies alone. Flocks of birds can also work together to spot food on the ground.

Only some kinds of birds fly in a V shape. Scientists are still learning why, but they think that by making this shape, the flock doesn’t have to fight the wind quite so much. And that means each bird can use less energy to fly. Flocks of birds may also make different shapes, or change their shape, to confuse the birds that hunt them.

The LEGO lion guarded an entrance to the Chain Bridge in Budapest, Hungary.

Is that lion made of LEGO bricks? It sure is!

The giant LEGO lion was built to sit at one entrance to the Chain Bridge, a famous crossing in the city of Budapest, Hungary. Normally, there are two stone lions at either entrance to the bridge, which was completed in 1849. In fact, the four roaring lions are a big part of why the Chain Bridge is famous.

But in 2021, the bridge became lion-less. That’s when workers temporarily removed the stone lions from their posts so that they and the bridge could be repaired. The LEGO lion was a perfect substitute for one of the four lions because it looks just like the stone statues!

The LEGO lion is ready for its closeup!

The LEGO lion is the same size as the stone lions and is designed to resemble (look the same as) them in every way. It was created by an artist named Balázs Dóczy. It took Dóczy 560 hours and 850,000 LEGO bricks to build the lion.

But Dóczy is a total expert when it comes to LEGO. He has used the plastic bricks to build models of many other Budapest landmarks. Unlike the lions, most of Dóczy’s creations are much smaller than the real thing. But they are remarkably detailed.

Dóczy’s LEGO lion is scheduled to be removed from the bridge at the end of November 2022. By that time, the stone lions should be ready to go back on their posts.

The stone lions were carefully lifted off the bridge so the bridge could be repaired.

Each of the stone lions on the Chain Bridge weighs nearly 14 tons. That’s almost 28,000 pounds (12,700 kilograms)! Moving the lions off the bridge required a lot of heavy machinery.

These Levi’s jeans were made in the 1880s. These are not the jeans that were found by Frank Schlichting—but they’re a lot like them!

When do you think people started wearing jeans? A museum in Yuma, Arizona, is home to some VERY old jeans. They were made in the late 1800s!

The seven pairs of jeans were discovered by Frank Schlichting in February 2020, in a nearby mine that is no longer in use. Schlichting explores many mines and makes YouTube videos of his adventures. The museum owns the mine near Yuma and had given Schlichting permission to explore it.

The YouTube video of the discovery shows Schlichting and Gabe Romo, who works with him, going 250 feet (76.2 meters) underground, into the mine where they had previously discovered the jeans under some rubble. The two men then use a pickaxe to uncover the seven pairs.

The jeans would have been worn by men who worked in and around the mines. Invented in 1873, blue jeans were designed to be worn by miners because they were less likely to be damaged than other types of pants. Jeans were, and still are, made from tough denim. Rivets (those little metal things) are used to hold together the fabric and prevent tearing. Styles have changed over the years, but the jeans worn by miners looked a lot like the jeans we wear today!

Jeans from the 1800s are extremely rare, making them very valuable. In October 2022, a pair of jeans from that time period sold for $87,000.

But the jeans Schlichting found won’t be sold. Instead, they’ll be kept at the Castle Dome Museum, near where they were found.

Who Invented Jeans?

Pictorial Press Ltd./Alamy

This is an ad for blue jeans from Levi Strauss and Company. The ad is from 1874!

If you ever wear jeans, you can thank a tailor named Jacob Davis. In 1871, Davis was living in Reno, Nevada, when a woman asked him to make a pair of tough pants. The woman’s husband worked in a mine, and his pants were always getting torn.

Davis decided to make pants that were held together with strong metal pieces called rivets. It was a great idea—so great that Davis wasn’t the only person who thought of it. Davis soon heard that a man named Levi Strauss was making similar pants and selling them in his family’s store in San Francisco, California. Davis contacted Strauss, and the two men decided to work together. In 1873, they filed a patent, which is a piece of paper from the U.S. government that says no one else can sell the same invention. Then, Davis and Strauss started selling their blue jeans.

The first pairs of jeans cost three dollars, which is worth about 74 dollars today. But for many mine workers, having a pair of pants that would last was worth the expense. The jeans proved to be very popular.

Jeans didn’t start to become popular for everyday wear until many years later. In the 1950s, some teenagers started to wear them. For a long time, most adults thought jeans were a little too informal. Grown-ups didn’t begin to wear jeans until about the 1970s. Today, jeans are everywhere!
