Ruby’s Story

February is Black History Month. Here’s the story of a young girl who helped change the country for the better.

When Ruby Bridges was 6 years old, she was the first Black student ever to go to her school. Bridges became famous as a brave girl who helped make the country a fairer, more equal place to live. Now, she’s telling her story in a book for kids called I Am Ruby Bridges.

Bridges was born in the 1950s, at a time when many public places in the southern United States were segregated. There were separate public schools for white and Black children. But in 1960, a court ruled that schools in New Orleans, Louisiana, where Bridges lived, could no longer be segregated. They had to be integrated. This means that schools had to allow both white and Black students to attend. A small group of children were selected to become the first Black students at different schools in the city. Bridges was chosen to go to William Frantz Elementary School.

Many white people were angry that the schools were being integrated. They turned their anger on Bridges. When she arrived at school, a crowd of people yelled at her and made it clear that they didn’t want her there. Bridges had to enter the school building with four federal marshals—people who were assigned to protect her.

When Bridges got to her classroom, she saw that she was the only student there. The other students’ parents had taken them out of school. All year, it was only Bridges and her teacher, who treated Bridges with kindness and respect. The two women are still close friends today.

Bridges played an important part in the civil rights movement and Black history. Her courage helped paved the way for schools in New Orleans to become fully integrated. But what was it really like for 6-year-old Ruby to go through this experience? In I Am Ruby Bridges, Bridges describes her experience, through the eyes of a kid.

“That [experience] shaped me into a person that is not prejudiced at all,” Bridges told the Associated Press. “And I feel like that little girl is still inside of me, and that it’s my calling to make sure kids understand that you can’t look at someone and judge them.”

In 2011, Ruby Bridges met with U.S. President Barack Obama. Obama was the nation’s first Black president. You can see some of this meeting in the video below.

February is Black History Month in the United States. The idea to set aside a time of year to celebrate Black history came from Carter G. Woodson, a writer who taught history. In 1926, Woodson started Negro History Week. It was set for the second week of February. Woodson wanted to celebrate the heritage (the background and story) of Black Americans and help educate all Americans about Black history.

In 1976, U.S. president Gerald Ford set aside all of February as Black History Month.

January is a big month in the world of books! Every year at the end of the month, the American Library Association (ALA) announces the winners of the biggest children’s book prizes in the world: the Newbery Medal and the Caldecott Medal.

The Newbery Medal is given to the author of the best U.S. children’s book published the year before. It’s not easy to pick the best out of a list of terrific books. So the ALA also awards Newbery Honors. This prize goes to a small number of other books the ALA wants to recognize for excellence.

The ALA recognizes children’s book illustrators with the Caldecott Medal. This prize is given to the artist who created the best illustrations for a U.S. picture book published the year before. Caldecott Honors go to other books the ALA wants to recognize.

How can you find these award-winning books? You can ask a teacher or librarian to help you. Newbery or Caldecott Medal winners have a round gold seal on their covers. Newbery or Caldecott Honors books have a silver seal. These seals let readers know that these books are some of the best in the world.

Here are just a few Newbery Medal winners to check out.

An Artist’s Life

Many artists create beautiful illustrations for picture books. Jerry Pinkney was one of the best.

Pinkney started drawing when he was a kid. For Pinkney, art wasn’t just a fun hobby. He found that drawing helped him stay calm.

Life wasn’t always easy for Pinkney when he was growing up. School could be hard because Pinkney had dyslexia. When a person has dyslexia, their brain works in a way that can make it hard to read. Pinkney also experienced racism. Because they were Black, he and his family weren’t always treated fairly. Sometimes Pinkney was confused or upset. But when he was drawing, he felt calm and happy.

When Pinkney grew up, he drew pictures for more than 100 children’s books. In 2010, Pinkney won the Caldecott Medal for a book called The Lion & the Mouse. It tells a very old fable (story) using no words—only pictures. Pinkney also won five Caldecott Honors for other books.

Jerry Pinkney died in 2021. He was 81. Before his death, Pinkney wrote a book for kids called Just Jerry. The book came out in January 2023. It tells the story of Pinkney’s life—not just in words, but also in pictures.

Isaiah Kofie was at home in Aurora, Colorado, one day when he heard music coming from the basement. Heading downstairs, he found his 10-year-old son, Jude, playing an old, unused keyboard.

“I was here watching the news when I heard him play something,” Isaiah Kofie told Denver7 News. “So I grabbed my phone [to take a video], went down there, and was like, ‘Dude, play that again.’”

Isaiah had been a drummer in Ghana, the country where he grew up. Unlike his dad, Jude had never played a musical instrument before. Yet he was picking out a melody perfectly. Jude is what some people call a prodigy. A prodigy is a kid who has an incredible talent.

Jude, who turned 11 in 2022, is now the lead keyboardist at the church his family attends. He also plays at weddings. He even has his own YouTube channel with thousands of followers. Jude can play everything from jazz to classical music. And he has never had a piano lesson.

Amazingly, Jude can play music by ear. He only has to hear a melody and he can figure out how to play it.

Jude’s talents have attracted a lot of attention. A man named Bill Magnusson heard about Jude when he was watching the news one night. Magnusson tunes pianos for a living. He’s also a music fan who knows talent when he hears it. Magnusson was so amazed when he heard Jude play that he bought him a grand piano, and he’s paying for him to have private lessons.

Old-School Talent

This painting shows Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and his sister, Maria Anna, seated at the piano. Their father, Leopold, is also in the painting.

Jude Kofie has been called a prodigy because of his natural musical talent. One of the most famous prodigies was Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Mozart was born in 1756 in what is now the country of Austria. He could play a keyboard instrument called the harpsichord when he was 4 years old. He started writing music when he was 5! Mozart’s sister, Maria Anna, was also a keyboard prodigy. Both kids got lessons from their father, Leopold, who was also a musician.

The Mozart kids were so amazing that the family traveled all over Europe so people could see them play. They were only 11 and 7 years old at this time. (If they were alive today, the siblings would probably have a YouTube channel!)

Leopold stopped taking Maria Anna on these tours when she reached a certain age. He decided that only Wolfgang should have a job writing and performing music. Things were not very fair for girls back then!

Wolfgang continued to get better and better. He went on to become one of the most famous composers (writers of music) ever. He wrote piano pieces, operas, symphonies, and more.

Based on fossils they have found, this is what scientists think a giant ichthyosaur looked like.

Blue whales are huge. These giants of the sea are known to reach lengths of 98 feet (about 30 meters). One blue whale can weigh about as much as 30 elephants! But are blue whales the largest animals ever? Maybe not. Scientists say that an ichthyosaur that lived about 200 million years ago might have been even bigger.

Ichthyosaurs were a group of reptiles that lived in the sea between 250 million years ago and about 65 million years ago. They were meat-eaters, so they would have hunted other animals in the sea. Although ichthyosaurs are extinct (no longer around), they’re related to today’s lizards and snakes. Scientists have found a lot of fossils of ichthyosaurs. Many of these fossils show that the animals had fins, long jawbones, and many sharp teeth.

There were different types of ichthyosaurs. Scientists have long known that some of them were large—but they didn’t know how large they could be. Recently, scientists studied a fossil that they think was once part of an ichthyosaur. Based on the size of the fossil, they think this ichthyosaur may have been up to 115 feet (35 meters) long. That’s as long as three school buses lined up front to back!

And it’s a lot longer than the blue whale!

Lunar New Year, a major holiday in China and around the world, begins on January 22, 2023. This annual holiday takes place on the day of the year’s first new moon—sometime in late January or February.

Lunar New Year is celebrated over the course of 15 days. Celebrations take place in several countries. The best known is Chinese New Year.

Lunar New Year is an opportunity for a fresh start. People often clean their homes before the new year to remove any bad luck from the previous year. They also decorate their homes in red, which is said to ward off bad luck.

The holiday is also a celebration. Families get together for a feast, and children receive red envelopes filled with money.

In the traditional lunar calendar, each year is represented by an animal. 2023 is the Year of the Rabbit.

In the lunar calendar, each year is represented by one of 12 animals. Use the wheel to see which animal represents the year you were born.

Whale, I’ll Have Some More!

That’s a pretty big whale!

It’s hard to imagine just how big a blue whale can be. Think of two school buses parked front to back. That’s longer than some houses! And that’s how long a blue whale is.

Why are blue whales so huge? Well, their bodies are built to take in a lot of food! Scientists say that early whales ate tiny living things called plankton. But as whales evolved, some of them developed a new way to eat called “lunge feeding.” In lunge feeding, a whale opens its giant mouth and takes in a whole lot of water, along with anything that’s swimming in that water. The water comes out of the whale’s throat until only the prey is left inside the whale’s body.

Lunge feeding is sort of like putting a big strainer into a pot of chicken noodle soup and then letting all the liquid out until there’s only chicken and noodles left in the strainer. Blue whales eat krill, which are similar to shrimp. Krill are tiny, compared to the blue whales that eat them. So lunge feeding is a great way for a big animal to get a big helping of food!

Martin Luther King, Jr., Day will be observed in the United States on January 16, 2023. You may already know that Martin Luther King, Jr., was an important leader in the civil rights movement. Today, King’s daughter is continuing his work.

Bernice King is the youngest daughter of Martin Luther King, Jr., and Coretta Scott King. The Kings taught their children what was important to them. They taught them that everyone should be treated equally and that laws should be fair. Martin Luther King, Jr., led marches and gave many speeches. He worked to change racist laws and wanted to help end poverty. The Kings believed that people could work for change in a peaceful way.

In 1968, Martin Luther King, Jr., was killed. Shortly after, Coretta Scott King started the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change. She wanted the King Center to be a place that continued her husband’s work and promoted his beliefs.

Today, Bernice King is the head of the King Center. The center gives people the skills they need to change unfair laws and actions. Under Bernice King’s leadership, the center is working to make the world a fairer, more equal place.

Like her father, Bernice King wants to spread her message as far as possible. She gives many speeches. In 2022, she co-wrote a children’s book called It Starts With Me. The book is about how everyone should love and care about others.

“Now more than ever, I believe that my father would encourage [all people] to join together in love,” Bernice King wrote in The Atlantic in 2021.

He may not be as old as Yoda from Star Wars, but Jonathan the giant tortoise has been around for a long time. In December 2022, Jonathan celebrated his 190th birthday! He’s the oldest-known land animal in the world.

Experts can’t be sure of Jonathan’s exact age. They’re guessing he was born around 1832, but his birth year may be even earlier. That’s because he was fully grown when people found him in the wild in 1882—and giant tortoises don’t stop growing until they are 40 or 50 years old!

Jonathan was brought to Saint Helena in 1882. This photo was taken soon after. Jonathan is the tortoise on the left!

Jonathan was taken from a group of islands called the Seychelles to Saint Helena, an island in the South Atlantic Ocean, and given as a gift to the island’s future governor. Today he lives on Saint Helena with three other giant tortoises. His favorite foods are bananas, cabbage, carrots, and apples. His hobbies include sleeping, eating, and walking…very slowly.

Amazingly, there’s a photo of Jonathan that was taken in 1882, shortly after he arrived on Saint Helena. The picture reveals that Jonathan hasn’t aged a day!

So Many Ants!

A colony of ants moves on the forest floor.

Can you guess how many ants there are in the world? The number is almost too big to imagine! Researchers believe that there are 20 quadrillion ants. That’s 20,000,000,000,000,000.

It’s not possible to count every single ant, so researchers had to make an estimate. To come up with that giant number, they looked at information gathered from researchers who studied ants all over the world. From there, they were able to come to another amazing conclusion. If you could gather all the ants in the world onto a huge scale, they would weigh 12 million tons (11 million metric tons)!

Scientists say it’s important to study ants because the insects help to keep the planet healthy. Ants are found on every continent except Antarctica. Ants eat other insects and their eggs, keeping insect populations under control. They also eat dead insects, so they play a big part in keeping the planet clean. Ants are even important for plant growth because they turn the soil as they move through it. This allows plant roots to grow through the soil and get the nutrients they need.

So, what does it mean that there are so many ants? Scientists say it means ants are super valuable. Researchers want to keep an eye on all the world’s ants. If the ants’ numbers go down, this will be a sign that the environment has become less healthy for living things.

There are more than 12,000 ant species. The Saharan silver ant lives in a desert called the Sahara. It can run 34 inches (86 centimeters) per second. That’s the same as if you were able to run 447 miles (720 kilometers) per hour—almost as fast as an airplane!

The ant dashes over the sand in the middle of the hot desert day to look for dead insects to eat. Like those insects, the ant would die in the heat if it wasn’t able to get back to its nest quickly.

Teamwork!

Have you ever seen a bridge like this?

Ants live together in groups called colonies. To keep the colony going, the ants need to make sure the head of the colony—the queen—has the nutrients she needs to lay eggs. They also need to feed the whole population and keep the nest clean. And they need to defend the colony against enemies, like other insects. Ants work together really well. How do they do it? They talk to each other!

Ants don’t actually speak, of course. They communicate, or talk, using chemicals. Worker ants release these chemicals from their bodies to send messages like “I found some food” and “Someone is attacking the colony!” The other ants use their antennas to smell these chemicals.

You may have watched as an ant discovered something sweet to eat. Before you know it, more ants have appeared. That’s because the first ant left a trail of chemicals leading to the food, and the other ants followed the trail!

On December 2, 2022, Prince William of the United Kingdom awarded five people with an important prize. The Earthshot Prize isn’t for music, movies, or sports. It’s for working to save Planet Earth.

The Earthshot Prize is given to people who are working on solutions to climate change and other environmental problems. Awards are given in five categories. Winners are chosen based on how effective or wide reaching their ideas are. This year’s winners each received 1 million pounds (about $1,200,000 in U.S. money).

The 2022 award ceremony took place in Boston, Massachusetts. The five winners were honored for working to protect the planet in different ways, from creating less pollution to protecting crops from severe weather. There were some big stars on hand to entertain them, including musicians Billie Eilish, Chloe and Halle Bailey, and Annie Lennox.

Prince William started the Earthshot Prize in 2020. He has often spoken about the importance of the environment. In a speech he gave in 2021, he spoke directly to young people.

“We are going to find solutions to repair our planet,” said Prince William. “Please keep learning, keep demanding change, and don’t give up hope. We will rise to these challenges.”

The Winners!

This photo shows a plastic alternative that was invented by a company called Notpla. Notpla was one of the winners of the 2022 Earthshot Prize.

Here’s who won the 2022 Earthshot Prize in each category.

Protecting Nature

A company from India called Kheyti won in this category for its Greenhouse-in-a-Box. The greenhouse protects crops from severe weather and harmful insects so farmers have more to sell and can make more money to feed their families. Crops grown in the greenhouse also require less water than crops that are out in the open.

Cleaning Our Air

Charlot Magayi of Kenya won for inventing a type of stove that’s safer and creates less pollution than a stove that burns charcoal for fuel. Magayi’s company, Mukuru Clean Stoves, sells stoves that run on fuel made from charcoal, wood, and sugarcane. The stoves aren’t just cleaner than charcoal stoves—they’re also cheaper to buy.

Saving Our Oceans

A group called the Queensland Indigenous Women Rangers Network (QIWRN) won in this category. QIWRN, which is based in Australia, has trained more than 60 Indigenous (Native Australian) women to be park rangers. The rangers collect information that helps protect the Great Barrier Reef, a huge group of coral reefs that are home to thousands of species of ocean life.

Reducing Waste

Pierre Paslier and Rodrigo Garcia Gonzalez of the United Kingdom won for inventing a material that can be used instead of plastic. Their company, Notpla (short for “Not Plastic”), produces a plastic alternative that’s made from seaweed. The company is working on creating even more materials. Its goal is to reduce plastic waste, which often ends up polluting the oceans.

Fixing Our Climate

A company called 44.01 won in this category for inventing a way to capture carbon dioxide, the main gas that’s contributing to climate change. The company removes carbon dioxide from the air by adding it to water and then pumping that water into cracks in a type of rock called peridotite. The carbon dioxide gets mineralized, meaning that it turns into rock. Once this happens, it won’t be released into the atmosphere again.

Singer Billie Eilish Works for Planet Earth

Billie Eilish (on screen) speaks to a group of people at the Greentech Festival. People go to the festival every year to talk about ways to make products that help Planet Earth.

Singer Billie Eilish was one of the performers when the Earthshot Prize was presented. It wasn’t the first time Eilish took action to help the planet. In June, she hosted a climate event called Overheated. Climate activists (people who work to save the planet), musicians, and designers attended the event. They talked about the ways in which they try to protect Planet Earth.

Why did musicians and designers want to talk about the planet? Musicians often go on tour to play concerts. They can affect the planet, depending on the way they choose to travel, the food they eat, and more. Designers make clothing. They make a lot of choices about what materials to use and where to get those materials, and those choices can affect the planet. So, the people at Overheated talked about making better choices.

Eilish thought about Planet Earth when she planned her 2022 World Tour. She and her crew used reusable water bottles and utensils, for example. To avoid food waste, they donated all the food they didn’t end up eating to groups that help to feed people. And items like plastic cups weren’t allowed at the places where Eilish had her concerts.

Everyone can make choices that help protect Planet Earth!

Vinice Mabansag, who was born in the Philippines, was one of the babies named as Earth’s eight billionth person. (There’s no way to know which baby was truly the eight billionth.)

November 15, 2022, was a big day for the entire planet. On that day, the world population reached eight billion!

How big is eight billion? If you write it out, it looks like this: 8,000,000,000. That’s a lot of people! Experts say the world population has grown by one billion in just the past 12 years.

What’s causing the population to grow? Experts say people are living longer than ever before. That’s because more people have clean drinking water and other resources to help them stay healthy. Plus, many diseases have become easier to treat. Overall, the world population is healthier than ever.

Another thing that can cause the population to grow is the birth of many babies. But experts say families have fewer children than they used to. So the birth rate (the number of babies born each year) is slower than it once was. The United Nations (UN) believes that the population will continue to grow until about the year 2080, when there will be a little more than 10 billion people in the world.

The UN says it’s important for everyone around the world to help make sure that the planet is healthy, safe, and peaceful. That way, all eight billion people can live happy, healthy lives.

Move your mouse along the line on the graph. You can see the world population in many years between 1500 and 2020.

Fun Fact

Some countries have a lot more people than other countries. China is the country with the highest population, at 1,426,000,000 people. However, experts believe that the population of India will soon grow to be the largest in the world.

What Is the United Nations?

At the United Nations, representatives from many countries meet to talk about issues affecting the whole world.

You may have heard about the United Nations, or the UN. The UN is keeping track of the world population. But why? What is the UN, and what does it do?

The UN is an international (worldwide) organization in which nations work together on problems that affect the whole world. Right now, 193 nations are members of the UN. Together, members talk about and work on solutions for problems like war, hunger, and climate change. They recognize that solving problems like these can lead to a healthier, more peaceful planet.

Every Person Counts!

There are a lot of people in the world. How do countries count their populations? Many countries have what’s called a census. It’s an official count of a population.

Alejandro is a business owner and Youtuber.

Alejandro Buxton is pretty busy. Like any 12-year-old, he goes to school every day. Alejandro is also an entrepreneur (a person who starts a business). Before and after school, he runs his company, Smell of Love Candles.

Alejandro began making candles to help his mom. She likes to light candles, but the scents were giving her headaches. Alejandro learned which ingredients might be causing those headaches, and he made candles with different ingredients. His mom felt so much better that Alejandro decided to start a candle business. Today, Smell of Love Candles makes candles with 26 different scents. They’re available online and at a kiosk (a stand) located in a mall near Alejandro’s home in Virginia. Alejandro’s mom helps him with the business side of things, and his younger sister, Valentina, assists with packing up candle orders.

Alejandro’s business is doing well, and he’s making money. He uses some of it to buy comic books and saves some of it so he can go to college. Alejandro wants to help other kids go to college too. According to the Smell of Love website, the company uses some of the money it makes from candle sales to pay for a scholarship fund. A scholarship is money that is given to kids to help them pay for their education.

Alejandro hopes to inspire other kids to follow their dreams. He offers advice on his YouTube channel and even hosts a podcast called Lessons from a Kidpreneur.

To Alejandro, success isn’t only about making money. It’s about using what he has to help others.

“My future goal is to just help people around the world,” Alejandro told the Gazette.

Go, Artemis!

On November 28, Orion reached its farthest distance from Earth. This was its view.

NASA is halfway through its Artemis I mission, and everything looks good!

NASA launched its Orion spacecraft on November 16, 2022, and it started orbiting the Moon on November 25. Orion is made to carry up to four astronauts, but no humans went on this trip. The purpose of Artemis I is to test the performance and safety of Orion. It’s sort of like a practice run. On November 28, Orion was 280,000 miles (450,000 kilometers) from Earth. If all goes as planned, it soon will carry astronauts way out there, too.

Artemis I is only the beginning. NASA is planning Artemis II for 2024. In that mission, Orion will take four astronauts to the far side of the Moon (the side farthest from Earth) and back.

Artemis III is planned for 2025. Orion will link up with another spacecraft, which will land two astronauts on the Moon. It will be the first time humans have set foot on the Moon since 1972!
